Family life: How does it impact mental health?
Relationships within a family can have a significant impact
on mental, behavioral, and even physical health. Numerous studies have
demonstrated that one's mental health can be impacted in both the long and
short term by social relationships, particularly family relationships. Mental
health can be benefited or harmed by these relationships, depending on their
nature.
MENTAL HEALTH IMPACT OF FAMILY
A person with mental health issues or disorders may be more
receptive to treatment if their family relationships are stable and supportive.
A person coping with a mental health issue can benefit from companionship,
emotional support, and frequently even financial assistance.
While some people with mental health problems may need a lot of help from their
families, others may just need help getting to and from treatment or the daily
companionship that most people need in times of need.
Negative family relationships can have a negative impact on mental health,
stress, and even physical symptoms, as evidenced by an increasing body of
research. A person's mental health can suffer or worsen as a result of their
family's lack of support, according to research.
Patients with mental health issues typically rely on family
members for the majority of their care, so when family members refuse to
provide this support, the recovery process can be hindered.
Abuse
Whether verbal or physical, can have a negative impact on a
person's mental health. A child who has been abused may develop a mental health
issue that will require treatment for the rest of their life. The symptoms of a
mental disorder can be severe and require years of treatment, depending on the
severity of the abuse, the length of time it has occurred, and the individual's
current mental health.
Even if a person's mental health symptoms appear to be under
control, someone who has been abused by a family member may still require
regular therapy. Abuse's impact on children and young adults is still being
researched.
Chronic Stress
Chronic stress can have a negative impact on both mental and
physical health. Anxiety and depression, for example, can develop as a result
of this stress over time. A family's chronic stress is especially concerning
because it frequently leaves the sufferer with few options for stress relief.
Ideally, family members who are willing to seek counseling
can alleviate this stress. However, if the patient's chronic stress continues,
they may need individual therapy to learn how to best handle their family's
circumstances.
If your family is having a negative effect on your mental
health, you might want to make an appointment with a therapist or counselor to
get help for your symptoms and learn ways to deal with problems with your
family.
The state of your mental health is usually out of your control, but you can decide to get help. Talk to your healthcare provider if your family isn't supportive so you can get the help you need.
